The south has brought us another good band. Ruckus from Los Angeles,
California are at full speed ahead with a sound that seems to have
been lost over the years. They are doing a sound that’s very loud
and brutal, similar to what I hate to categorize in the tough guy or
beatdown hardcore section. I was blasting the first 2 songs they put
out on their myspace, and I was hooked. When I first heard their
guitar tone, I knew that they have been influenced by a lot of
Hardcore metallic bands like All Out War, Merauder and most of the
mid 90′ bands out of Jersey like E-town, Second To None and Fury of
Five (they also recorded a cover of Taste the Steel.) If you’re into
pushing weights, getting ignorant at shows, jail tattoos and Slayer,
this has your name on it.

“Forked Road” is about choices! The lyrics are filled with life’s
big choices, CROWNED KINGS style is a deliberate choice, and even
when it comes to the song structure and the song titles the choices
being made by the tough hardcore band from Melbourne, Australia,
become clear.

CROWNED KINGS may be new to many Europeans, but after just listening
to “Forked Road” once, it becomes clear that they are an experienced
collective of skilled musicians, no history or back story is needed
to prove that point. A quick glance at the band’s history reveals
that they have already released an album two years ago: “Wise Guy”.
The inspiration for both albums and the inspiration for CROWNED
KINGS’ own style, obviously lies in America, which is especially
apparent on the previous album. Among the influences are definitely
Madball, Terror and Hatebreed, but a strong influence is not a bad
thing, if you turn it into your own thing, and that is where CROWNED
KINGS show off their experience, their drive and their passion for
hardcore. The influence may be from America, but the various
elements like the classic structure, the relatable lyrics on the
verge of being cliche and the well-played combination of guitars,
bass and drums are in the case of CROWNED KINGS combined with
something that makes the sound specific to this exact band. They add
a level of energy that is insane, groovy parts that get you
instantly moving and a voice that cannot and will not be denied. The
title song “Forked Road” is a perfect example of what CROWNED KINGS
can do with just 2 minutes and 38 seconds: catchy melody from the
get-go, adding Makka’s aggression-filled, infuriated vocals, chorus,
break and a change in tempo with just 30 seconds left, dragging the
melody down and turning the song into a groovy anthem finished off
with the whole point of the song: “I will always live my life for
me!”

When looked at in smaller pieces the construction of the album seems
so simple; the melodies, the lyrics, the pounding drums as a
backbone to every song, but when it is put together they all seem
like the right choices and something magical and ensnaring happens.
Each song on the album is a perfect choice and it is a clear sign of
quality how each song becomes instantly recognizable after just
listening to it a few times, a trait of masters of the genre.
Together the songs form a path that exposes the world we live in
today, whether it is in Australia, Europe or anywhere else, a
universal struggle so to speak. Even when CROWNED KINGS “Aim for the
Top”, there is still “Rage Inside”, mankind is faced with the harsh
reality depicted in “Slave to the Cash” or “Deadbeat” and in the end
it is all about the “Forked Road”, about choices, and about the fact
that you “Never Give Up”.

When you are facing the choice of picking a hardcore band that will
blow you away with clean, groovy, yet also aggressive hardcore, the
choice is simple: choose CROWNED KINGS!
